I had not read anything of Chandler and was unaware of the existence of his great article, The Simple Art of Murder". What I gleaned is the value he places of atmosphere and, above all, character - in this case the character of the detective/hero. The melding of the character with the situation, in which his personality impacts the situation as fully as does the criminal, is one of the greatest facets of terrific detective and crime fiction, in my opinion. A great mystery is a wonderful thing, but without a great detective - filled with humanity, both the good and the bad - a mystery will be a flat who-done-it.
